Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT)

Is your couple or marital relationship on the brink? Perhaps you and your partner feel like roommates living under the same roof, or maybe you spend most of your time arguing and bickering about all sorts of things. Many couples seeking therapy aren’t sure if their relationship can be fixed.  If you can relate to this, please hold onto the hope that you can regain a sense of intimacy, emotional connection, and trust in your relationship.

There is hope!  We can help.

EFT – Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy

At A New Beginning, we help couples utilizing a type of therapy designed specifically for couples called Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy, or EFT for short. EFT is an evidence-based, effective form of relationship therapy that gets right to the heart of your relationship conflict, and helps you and your partner (re)connect emotionally, physically, and sexually.

EFT was developed by Dr. Sue Johnson in the early 1980s . The goal of EFT is to help partners understand their destructive “dance” – how each responds to the other and interacts in the relationship – that keeps both partners feeling unsatisfied. Through the exploration of key emotions that fuel both partners’ roles in the dance, more tender and loving ways of interacting with each other evolve. To learn more about EFT from the creator herself, watch this short video by Dr. Sue Johnson.

Unlike many couple & marital therapy approaches that teach partners how to use “I” statements and solve problematic, superficial topics in their relationship, EFT is a revolutionary approach that uses emotions to understand why partners behave in a certain way with the person closest to them. Because this model goes below the surface of topics and gets to the “heart” of the matter, research studies consistently find that the majority (75-90%) of couples who participate in EFT sustain lasting change and are equipped to effectively resolve future topics that develop in their relationship.
