Finding Love and Meaning with the Frankl Family

by

“Love deeply, and don’t waste time.” the sage words of Elly Frankl;  the beautiful, determined, dedicated, longtime love, spouse and now widow, of iconic Existential psychiatrist, Viktor Frankl, embraced me.

With the love and conviction of an older woman who has gone before me, Elly came toward me, piercing my eyes with the strength and resolute of hers. And putting her arms around to address me fully, she Gifted me with the wisdom she’s gained after having lived through the very best of Life and the very worst of Life, for the past 95 years.

“Love fully. Love every day. And don’t let him go.” Elly repeated as she squeezed my hand and leaned in close, resolutely commanding, “Time should never be wasted.”

We then hugged with a familiarity of two women who have known each other for decades even though we had just met, and laughed as we tried to take Selfies… me struggling to get the camera straight, with tears blurring my vision and hands shaking with the intensity of emotion created by our brief, albeit poignant, interlude.

I was aware of a deep, ever-so-moving surge of absolute appreciation pulsing through my Soul, as I took a moment to pause and experience and acknowledge the magnitude of this beautiful, meaningful moment.

The opportunity to gather within Viktor Frankl’s home, to be lovingly welcomed by three generations of Frankls; including amazing 95 year old Elly, Viktor Frankl’s daughter, Gaby, and son-in-law, Franz, and his grandson, Alex.  As well as his kind and caring girlfriend, Carina.

Living legends of Existential hope and choice and resilience.  Present day messengers of the Self-responsibility to find and live within one’s meaning, regardless of circumstance.

A commitment to create and live, a purposeful Life.

I had many amazing experiences while recently visiting Vienna. But without a doubt, the opportunity to spend such beautiful, meaningful time with the intelligent, humble and generous-of-heart Frankls, was the absolute pinnacle.

Beautiful, kind, strong, people with a sole purpose to help other’s live their Soul’s purpose, by encouraging them to find MEANING.

This Existential psychologist will always be grateful for the life and work and dedication of both Viktor and Elly Frankl.  And now, their family members who are equally as committed to keeping the words and the mission of their beloved Viktor Frankl alive.

Thank you for Blessing me with the Grace of your Spirit, Elly.  I will work everyday to abide by your words. To never waste time. To love deeply and fully. To not let love get away. And to live my life by seeking and finding meaning, in the small and the big. The beautiful and the tragic.

Each and every day.

Thank you for all that you have done, and for all that you continue to do, dearest Elly Frankl and family.

With love & meaning,

Julie
