Maudsley Family-Based Treatment (FBT) for Anorexia
Family-Based Treatment (FBT), also known as The Maudsley Approach, is an evidence-based treatment for adolescents with anorexia nervosa.
FBT is effective for adolescents newly diagnosed with anorexia nervosa (within the past 3 years) who require significant weight restoration in order to support health and well-being. FBT relies heavily on healthy family involvement in order to support therapeutic nutritional and emotional goals.
Typical length of treatment with FBT is 15-20 sessions. Interventions include:
- Parent support and education;
- Establishment of strategies to support weight restoration and nutrition stabilization;
- Assisting the adolescent to explore his/her identity and assume age-appropriate responsibilities.
