Having trouble determining if your hunger is physical or emotional? This can be challenging for all of us at times.

A helpful way to figure this out is to ask yourself if you’re hungry enough to eat an apple. Apples are a neutral food that most people enjoy when hungry, but wouldn’t necessarily crave (like chocolate or potato chips) when feeling emotional. If the answer to this question is no, your “hunger” will probably not be satiated by food; rather, you likely have an unmet emotional need that would be better met by something other than food.

Perhaps consider taking some quiet time for yourself, talking with a trusted friend or loved one, or engaging in an activity that leaves you feeling happy and calm.
